Best time to visit Japan

7 August 2026

When to go for cherry blossoms, autumn colour, snow and quiet streets, month by month, from people who book Japan trips for a living.

People ask us this more than any other question, so here is the honest answer. There is no single best time to visit Japan. There is a best time for what you want to see, and that changes a lot between March and December.

Below is how the year actually feels on the ground, plus what it means for your flights and hotel prices.

Spring, March to May

This is peak season and it earns it. Cherry blossom usually opens in Tokyo and Kyoto in late March and lasts about ten days in each city, moving north as the weather warms. Days sit around 15 to 20C, so you can walk all day in a light jacket.

The catch is everyone else wants it too. Hotels in Kyoto sell out months ahead and prices climb. If blossom is your reason for going, book early and be a little flexible on dates, because the bloom shifts by a week or two every year.

Late April brings Golden Week, a run of national holidays when the whole country travels. Trains and hotels get busy and pricey. We usually steer people either side of it.

Summer, June to August

June is the rainy season in most of the country. It is warm and green and much quieter, and you will pay less. Bring an umbrella and plan indoor days.

July and August are hot and humid, often above 32C in the cities, but this is festival season. Fireworks nights, street food and the big summer matsuri are genuinely special. If heat bothers you, head north to Hokkaido, which stays comfortable, or up into the mountains.

Autumn, September-October to November

If you asked us to pick one window, this is it. Late October into November gives you clear skies, temperatures around 15 to 22C and the autumn leaves, which in Kyoto and Nikko are every bit as good as the blossom. Typhoon risk fades through September.

Prices sit below spring peak and the crowds are more manageable, so you get the best of both.

Winter, December to February

Cold in the north, mild in the south, and the cheapest time to fly. Tokyo and Kyoto are crisp and clear, temples look wonderful with fewer people in your photos, and the food is at its best. Snow monkeys, hot springs and world class powder in Hakuba and Niseko all belong to this season.

Skip the first week of January if you can, when the country slows down for new year.

Quick answer by what you want

  • Cherry blossom: late March to early April
  • Best weather and value together: late October to November
  • Festivals and long daylight: July and August
  • Cheapest flights and quiet temples: January and February
  • Skiing and hot springs: December to February
